Darrell Guillaume, Color Genius

Brain cancer is...

 ...unabashedly bumptious about wardrobe skills.

You and I know Darrell to a humble man...usually.

Lately he's been a bit boastful about his dressing choices.  One day he proudly displayed his black shorts-gray shirt combination and said, "It's amazing what I can do with just a couple colors."  On another he remarked, "I'm very happy with my wardrobe selection" (Yes, another shorts/tee shirt combo.)  One morning he awoke and said,"I am excited about my plans for my choice of clothes for the day."

Today he took his boasting to a new level.  He selected the shirt to wear after his array change.  In the picture, above, he's marveling, "I am a color genius!"  Do you see what I mean?  He no longer even needs to find perfection in the shirt/shorts match; now it's enough to just pick out a shirt.  Genius!

He makes me laugh every day.

We hope that you had some moments of genius, laughter, or both to get you through your Monday.

Lean

Brain cancer is...

 ...feeling productively lean.

We spent the morning with LuAnn today, who was motivated to go through her closet.  The picture, above, gives hanger proof that she gave away three lawn bags full of clothes.  Her closet can breathe now, and better yet, many people will no doubt appreciate new finds because of her. Bravo, Mom!

The fastest way to lose 10 pounds?  Go through your closet!

While Mom and I were going through her closet, Darrell was doing his handy man best in home repairs.  What a great day!

Outside, spring was definitely continuing to spring.

Grown Kids are Kool.

Brain cancer is...

...appreciating a day spent with Summer and Zachary.

Some Team D members have told us that grown kids are a pleasure.  Today we gathered plentiful evidence to support your assertion.

We started the day with a walk with Zach and Summer at Craig Park.  When Summer comes, lizards are added to the festivities.

Yes, she caught this one.  She is known in many circles as Summer the Lizard Whisperer.

Then Summer and I ditched the men for a great afternoon at Nordstrom.  Our salesperson, Chris, had mad clothes skills.  Check out our dressing room, so nicely arranged:

We each came home with four things, and I am set for the Tampa Commencement Extravaganza.

We picked up Darrell and Zachary and ended the day with deliciously decadent wasabi fries and sushi at Tokyo Kitchen.

How was your Saturday?

Friday's Family Happiness

Brain cancer is...

...finding plenty of family happiness this Friday.

  • We enjoyed breakfast and Glendora's annual chalk fest with Gordon.
  • Before we left Gordon, we got a call from Alex:  He and Tiana are finished with medical school! Welcome, Drs. Guillaume. We will see them graduate in Tampa on 4/20.
  • As one great school experience ended, another began.  Our nephew, Bennett, and his family visited San Diego State University today. Bennett made the important decision:  He's joining the Aztec family!
Above is Bennett in a pic taken by his parents.  He's sporting his first spirit wear, a gift from fellow Aztecs:  Uncle Darrell and Aunt Andi.  Welcome to the family, Bennett.

Young people doing incredible things make us happy!

Musings on Happiness

Readers Advisory:  This is a ponderous post.  Here's the short version:  We are well, usually happy, and always grateful.

Brain cancer is...

...thinking about happiness.

Have you ever had the experience of disparate events, conversations, and readings somehow all coalescing at just the right time to teach you something about life?  That's happening to us today with "happiness."

Disclaimer:  We are not always happy (although Darrell comes pretty close).  Some days my only goal is to remain upright and moving forward until the clock says that it's acceptable for me to "fall over" and call it a day.  I'm not sure whether it's despite occasional sadness or maybe because of it that we were open to muse about happiness today.  Here are some recent moments of happiness and the lessons we're learning from them.

Sharing Spring Babies Makes Us Happy

Before we even made it to the park this morning, we were laughing aloud at the goslings Terri texted us from her own walk.  When we arrived at the park, we had our first sighting of the season's ducklings.

We were so glad to run into Raymond Family friends to enjoy the wonder of new, fuzzy life with us.  Ducklings are best shared.  Even strangers stopped to laugh together with us.  Spring babies make people happy.

Sharing Books Makes Us Happy

Brenda and Jay Spencer have been dear friends since Brenda and I were faculty members together.  Brenda, a literacy expert, and I have always enjoyed reading the same books and sharing our perspectives.  Brenda recently recommended   A Gentleman in Moscow.

We used the Kindle app to share memorable quotes and then discussed the book.  It makes me happy to talk with Brenda about books!

Also, A Gentleman in Moscow makes me happy.  In this piece of historical fiction, the main character, a former aristocrat placed under house arrest in the Metropol hotel during the Bolshevik revolution, finds happiness despite the drastic changes in his life and country.

The Count was a great model of looking for the best in people and learning from anyone who came his way.  He was flexible in all things and approached life with gratitude.  At one point he said,"Let us simply agree that the wise man celebrates what he can."

I loved this book so much that I started reading it again as soon as I finished it.

Simultaneously, I am loving a gift from my husband, The Laws Guide to Nature Drawing and Journaling.  (Donna: You need it!)  The author, John Muir Laws uses journaling to understand and enhance his appreciation of nature.  He gives this quote by David Stindl-Rast*:

"It's not happiness that makes us grateful.  It's gratefulness that makes us happy."
That's it isn't it?  It's the gratefulness for friends who stop, look, and wonder at new life and great literature.  It's laughing together about ducklings.  It's appreciating the lessons we can learn from even fictional good people.  It's the gratefulness for the gift of another moment and the promise it holds.  That's happiness.

Final Question for the Day

Who is happier than Mousse with a bubble machine?

Answer:  Darrell, with that same bubble machine.

Happy Day, Friends.

*Stindl-Rast's 14-minute TED Talk on Grateful Living eloquently expresses a simple approach that really resonates with us in our happiness musing state.

Polishing Golden Friendships

Brain cancer is...

 ...polishing friendships from the '80s.

Today we enjoyed lunch with Mara Casey and Spencer Grant in their home with beautiful views (above).

Mara and I started our friendship in my first graduate class at UC Riverside in 1985.  We both finished our PhD degrees at UCR in the same field.  Since then we've stayed in touch.

Mara and Spencer were there before the birth of our sons, and, in fact, Spencer documented many points in our family's history with his topnotch work as a freelance/stock photographer.  Here's an example:
The Guillaumes, 1993: Fashion Scions
Mara and Spencer have been always been supportive friends, and they have especially reached out after Darrell's diagnosis.  Thanks, Mara, and Spencer, for our shiny gold friendship.

And here's to all treasured relationships!

A Nice, Balanced Day

Brain cancer is...

...filling the day with a good balance of activities.

Today was both pleasant and productive.

Darrell fixed the bathroom door, which involved removing it and sawing it down.  Yes, it really does work better now.  Sorry I missed the pic, but I was--meanwhile--having pancakes and pedis with Kristine.
Good medical news!  Darrell's fecal occult blood test results are in:  Normal!  No need for that colonoscopy he is skipping for the time being.  (He wants to continue supporting you in your colon health so he knew you'd want to hear the good news.)

We did errands like take the vacuum cleaner in for repair and order new glasses for me, after Mousse gave my current pair some love nibbles.

They were genuine weapons when he finished.

We also got in two walks at the park, for a total of 8 miles.
A perfectly balanced day.  Hey, wait a minute!  How do people squeeze in work?
