Weekend Time

Brain cancer is...

...enjoying the weekend.

While Andi had one more meeting day, Darrell joined Beth and Geoff at lunch to get the weekend started.

The remarkable weather, beautiful places, and great people just refuse to end!

Welcome to the Porch!

Brain cancer is...

...satisfied with dinner on The Porch.

Today included all the requisite pieces for a great day.  Darrell rested and seems to be progressing with his mucky cold.  Andi learned lots about mathematics lesson study.  Dinner on The Porch was right next to the speaker for the live musician, but was overall very satisfying.

Here are some images of the day. Welcome!
The Walk to Breakfast.  Thinking of Alex's Marriage Proposal to Tiana, in a Similar Balloon Here.

Third-grade Math:  Rock on, Mathematicians!

Walking to Dinner:  These Birds Were Showy AND Noisy.  Don't Know.

After Dinner on the Porch:  The Walk Back.
Welcome to the Porch!  Welcome to the Weekend, Loved Ones!

Index Card Postscript

After my meeting, we changed arrays.  During the change, Darrell said, "Thank you for being my Adventure Girl."  May I change my one index card?  Maybe The Work is Adventure Girl work. In any case...

Here's to the next adventure!

What Is "The Work"?

Brain cancer is...

...always giving us things to think about.

First:  The news you need.
What did Darrell do today? One thing he did was figure out all the light switches in our Temecula villa.  He also rested because (dang it!) he came down with a mucusy cold in these few days before the MRI. For the scan, he needs to hold his head perfectly still for about 45 minutes, a task made more difficult by mucus.  Beat that cold, Darrell!  Full scan ahead!

Next:  What Is "The Work"?
When one attends a multi-day professional meeting for the first time in a long time, one hears forgotten terminology.  Today at my meeting, people kept talking about "the work," but they pronounced it like this:  The Work.  (Example:  "For us, The Work is about supporting student learning in mathematics.")

At first I thought, "How cute!  These people who drive 'to work' every day think that there is 'The Work'!"

Then a keynote speech required me to revise my thinking about The Work.  Karen Mayfield-Ingram invited us to think about the facets of our identity.  She described "identity" as things that are assigned to us (e.g., race, sex, social class) and things we choose (e.g., values, beliefs, and experiences that define us).

Here's where you participate remotely,  in your minds.  Take eight index cards.  Write one facet of your identity on each card.  (Examples to get you started:  1. parent, 2.  reader, 3. female...)  Please, at least write two or three mental cards so you'll appreciate the post's punchline.

After we wrote eight cards, Karen asked us to discard, one by one, our cards, using the any criteria we chose.  We threw away facets of identity in stages until we were each left with just one card. One card.

That's when it occurred to me:  "The Work" is what's written on that one remaining card.  Over dinner (above) Darrell and I found connections between our two cards.

What's written on that solo card?  That's The Work.  This was a big conversation for us.

(Want to play?  You show your solo card and we'll we'll show you our solo cards.)

A final question to lighten the mood:

Despite the fact that this photo is blurry, we wonder...Where might the exit be?

He had me at the Hawaiian shirt.

Brain cancer is...

 ...on vacation, Baby!

We are in Temecula for a several-day meeting for me with the California Mathematics Project.  So I have had my work face on: Ready to get here and get serious.  And then Darrell entered the room in his Hawaiian shirt (above).  Now we are both on vacation.  All day long.

Work, work, work!

Cancer Eradication Efforts in Five Steps

Brain cancer is...

...done with Step One for April.

April is the third month since January, so it's cancer eradication month.  Typically, his cancer eradication efforts proceed in five steps:
1.  Blood test
2.  MRI
3.  Radiologist reading of MRI scan (posted online)
4.  Dr. Cloughesy (UCLA)
5.  Dr. Park (St. Jude)

Above you see Darrell with our favorite phlebotomist, Ken.  Ken's been there since the beginning.  Today he celebrated the first months of Darrell's fourth year post diagnosis.  I wish I caught the photo of the handshake!

Step One:  Check. By 7:20 a.m., Darrell was walking out of the lab.

Step Two:  The MRI is scheduled for next week (4/16).

Early Day = Early Post.

Happy Tuesday, Team D!

38 Months

Brain cancer is...

...three years and two months old today.

Not a single day goes by that we don't feel gratitude and happiness for another day on this beautiful planet with beautiful people.

Let's have steak!

Chasing Shade...Already!

Brain cancer is...

 ...chasing shade. So soon!

We thought that today's story would be the color of the day.* But then the story changed.

I chose Carbon Canyon for our walk today.  Carbon Canyon includes our most exposed, hottest trail.  That would have been fine, but I got caught up in work, and by the time we got to the park, Darrell's Optune unit was heat alarming.  Above you see him shade chasing...so early in the year!

We left Carbon Canyon and finished our walk at Craig Park.

As you see, Darrell was successful in catching the shade.

Happy Sunday, Team D!

*By the way, the color of the day was...
...green.
