Brain cancer is...

...requiring fun new merchandise, courtesy of Optune necessities.

First the news:
  • Double Chemo Days 1 (yesterday) and 2 (tonight) went fine.  Phew.
  • Optune Day 1 went well.
    • Darrell managed the battery changes well when he wasn't "Pluggin'" (his term for using power from the wall outlet).  Each battery lasts 2 hours, we've found.
    • Darrell didn't strangle himself with his wires during the night.
  • You're wondering when he "takes it off." He doesn't.  Those sticky bandages are on his scalp until we change them, probably every three days.  Then his scalp is bare solely for the time it takes us to put on new arrays.  "Taking a break" just means unplugging from the wall or battery.
  • Darrell did well in going out in public today, which of course is intimidating as a new adventure.  Only one person responded with a noise of surprise.  The rest of Fullerton was fine with it.  We had our line ready in case people asked:  "It's a medical device that interrupts cell growth in any cancer cells."  However, we're considering changing the line to this more whimsical version:  "It's a mind control device that my wife operates through an app on her iPhone."
  • Darrell currently has four batteries.  Device Specialist Amy suggested we stick painters tape on them and number them so that we can track their longevity and any potential problems.  Number them?  That's for the unimaginative!  Darrell named them all.  They are all named "James."  James Kirk, James Bond, James West, and James and the Giant Peach.  Of course.
And now on to the merchandise:

  • Optune brings new pillows!  The new ones are gel-filled to cool Darrell's hot head.

  • Optune brings new hats! This will bring pain to some, we know, but Optune Era hats need to be huge (to fit over the arrays and wires), light colored (to not absorb heat) and fully ventilated.  He still rocks it.

  • Optune brings new shirts! It's easier for Darrell to change button down shirts, given his wire ponytail and its connection to the device.  (No, I did NOT pick out the Hawaiian shirt.  Darrell loves Hawaiian shirts.  It's great, isn't it?)

  •  Optune brings new luggage!  We needed a large, hard-sided suitcase to carry the Jameses, etc., during our impending travels.
Thanks for helping us usher in the new era!
