Happy Birthday, USA!

Readers note:  Andi's the main blogger today. Darrell's the main griller.

Brain cancer is...

 ...celebrating Independence Day.

We started the day with a walk at the park.  We fear that the ducks (above) are lined up by the lake to watch fireworks that aren't going to happen.

During our walk, we talked about what's to love about America.  Our conversation has continued throughout the day.

We read the Declaration of Independence, the adoption of which we celebrate today.  The Declaration makes it clear that Americans believe that all humans are born equal, and that they have many rights from which they should never be separated.  And its existence proves that people have the responsibility to address to existing wrongs in order to ensure that people are not deprived the opportunity to live and be happy on the same footing as everyone else.

From our list of why we love this country, Darrell and I decided that our number one reason is this:  America never stops trying.

Our country's history is the story of a country where some people have been "more equal" than others from the start.  Our history is a history of continued struggle.  Inequity is deeply embedded--even into the fabric of our laws.  It causes pain and injustice for many groups, and the fight to rectify injustice is difficult. We still haven't gotten it right as a nation.  But you know what?  We never stop trying.

America has always been home to passionate, principled people who fight for justice.  Here's to the patriots from the beginning of our country to today who continue the American struggle for equality, the beautiful if elusive notion laid out in the very document that makes us a nation.

A Promise to Nova

Dear Nova,
We promise you that we will continue to admit our part in the mistakes this nation has made.  And we promise that we will not stop living our lives in ways that leave your America a little more just than the one of the past, and of today.  Then it'll be your turn.
We love you,
GPops and GMama

Today's Bloom

Our backyard spathiphyllum chose today to bloom.  Common name of this flower?  The peace lily.
