Big D and the Big Six Oh

 Brain cancer is...

...happy.

When Darrell was diagnosed with GBM 4 and a half years ago, we hoped he would hit median survival, 18 months.  That was three years ago.

And the night before his tumor resection surgery, holding his hand in Intensive Care, I erased my vision of us having the privilege of growing old together, hobbling through travels, shoulders slumped and hands clasped.

And now...here we are!  We're slowly losing our hearing, buying readers for Darrell at Dollar Tree, and looking into blood pressure medicine.  Friends,  there is nothing sweeter.  The greatest lesson we have learned is to appreciate every single second of another day here on this planet.

The last years have been some of the happiest of our lives.  Darrell spent part of his big day starting a list called 60 Good Things about 60.  It's halfway done. He works slowly now, you know.  Ha ha!

He's open to your ideas, 60+ friends. What's on your list?

Darrell also spent the Actual Day enjoying one more day at the harbor.  Here are some highlights.

Breakfast at Proud Mary's.  We finally got the big table.

We walked the harbor, all the way out to the point (which is where Darrell sat for the top picture, and is pictured, below).  No sign of Christine's hat anywhere.

Darrell really needed me to have two new pairs of earrings and more reversible shoes for his birthday. I obliged, being the giver that I am. Anything for my husband.

Lunch was at our new favorite restaurant, Waterman's.

Forget his chardonnay!  Check out the first of Darrell's free birthday desserts.

Chocolate butter cake.  Good thing for the four-mile walk at the harbor.

Tonight, our last night here, we face our fridge leftovers from delivered meals with the kids.  It's now or never for the pizza.  Can't believe there's no more chocolate butter cake!

Thanks for all your love to Darrell today...and every single day.  Here's to Sweet, Sweet 60!

This may be our last Doheny Beach sunset...

...but the sun is not setting on Birthday Month.  We're not ever halfway through yet, loved ones.  Let's all stay focused!
